Enabling OS Firewall, setting UltraMonTaskBad to trusted, then disabling OS Firewall resolved the issue. But since OS Firewall was disabled, it ignored me when I told it that UltraMonTaskBar was a trusted application. For some reason OS Firewall was preventing UltraMonTaskBar from hooking into explorer even though it was disabled.

Saw over at Neowin that ZoneAlarm Pro will be available from 11/18 til 6AM on 11/19 for free The popular Windows firewall application ZoneAlarm Free has a big brother called ZoneAlarm Pro, which boasts a handful of features not available in the free version, including integrated antivirus. I would recommend contacting their support regarding this, they'll be able to tell if there's a fix/workaround. Maybe a new feature in Zone Alarm, the UltraMon taskbar always installed a hook in explorer.exe. Update: I have disabled all features in Zone Alarm Pro (while allowing Zone Alarm Pro to continue to run), with no success. It’s been about a year since I used both Zone Alarm and Smart Taskbar together (I was without dual monitors for a while), but I didn’t have any problems back then. If I start Zone Alarm Pro after Smart Taskbar, I don’t get the error and everything seems to run fine. I just figured out that the error only occurs if Zone Alarm Pro is running when Smart Taskbar starts.
Do you have a security application installed which might prevent other applications from hooking explorer.exe?

You'll get this error if UltraMon can't install a hook in the main taskbar. UltraMon Taskbar encountered a fatal error and will exit. If I try UltraMon 3.0.7, I get the same results with the following error message: If I look at Task Manager while restarting the Smart Taskbar, the process “UltraMonTaskbar.exe” shows up briefly, and then disappears. I can restart the Smart Taskbar from the system tray with the same effect.
